Threads of Resilience – A pop-up exhibition showcasing the embroidery work of brain injury survivors in Jersey

We are proud to present Threads of Resilience, an inspiring pop-up exhibition showcasing embroidery works crafted by members of Headway Jersey, all of whom are survivors of brain injuries. Open from Saturday 28th September to Wednesday 2nd October, this exhibition offers a unique glimpse into the strength, creativity, and recovery journey of our members. Each piece is a testament to their resilience and artistic talent.

The collection is the result of our weekly embroidery group, where participants work in a supportive and nurturing environment to express themselves through the art of stitching. For many, this creative process plays a key role in their recovery, helping rebuild fine motor skills, boost self-esteem and foster a sense of accomplishment. Beyond the physical benefits, embroidery provides therapeutic value, promoting cognitive rehabilitation and emotional healing.

One of the standout techniques on display is stump work, a form of raised embroidery that gives a three-dimensional texture to the artwork. This intricate method involves using wire, fabric and stitches to create tactile, elevated designs that bring the work to life. For our group members, this challenging yet rewarding technique helps enhance hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness, while also stimulating creative problem-solving skills that may have been impacted by their brain injury.

Each embroidery piece tells a personal story, often inspired by the artist’s own experiences, emotions or nature motifs. Some choose to incorporate symbols of strength and recovery, while others use their designs to reflect on the past or dream about the future. The mindful nature of the embroidery process helps members focus on the present moment, providing calm, reducing stress, and rekindling sensory processing skills.

Alli Carroll, our Activities Coordinator, shared her excitement about the exhibition:
“We’re delighted to showcase these incredible pieces of embroidery, which highlight the resilience and creativity of people with brain injuries. Each work of art tells a unique story of healing and strength, and we hope this exhibition will inspire others and raise awareness about the support Headway Jersey provides.”
