Join us for the 7th annual Running For Frubbs 10 mile race, a special memorial run organised by Headway Ambassador Harry McAlinden in memory of his dear friend, Frank MacFarlane.

Frank became a member of Headway Jersey following a brain injury and this event honours his legacy while helping to raise both awareness and funds for the vital work the charity does to support individuals that have been affected by a brain injury.

We would like to extend our gratitude to Mel Owers Painters and Decorators for generously sponsoring this event since its inception. Their continued support has enabled us to keep this race going year after year.

Thank you to the Ports of Jersey and Jersey Development Company for their use of the Waterfront area, to Cineworld for kindly allowing us to use their venue for our awards presentation and to Hapi Lifestyle for their assistance with the race pack pick ups.

About Frank “Frubbs” MacFarlane

Frank MacFarlane, fondly remembered as “Frubbs,” moved to Jersey from Dumbarton and worked in Hospitality for many years before he was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After leaving hospital, he became a member of Headway Jersey and greatly benefited from the support the charity provides to individuals living with a brain injury.

Sadly, Frank passed away in July 2017. In his memory, his close friend and Headway Ambassador, Harry McAlinden, decided to organise the “Running for Frubbs” event, a tribute to Frank’s legacy and friendship. This year, the run will take place on 24th November 2024 — just one day before what would have been Frank’s 66th birthday.

Frank was a dear friend to many, and his love for music, especially The Rolling Stones and The Who, lives on in the hearts of those who knew him. He often brought in his CD collections to play during the arts and crafts focus group at the day centre, creating a vibrant and positive atmosphere for all members to enjoy — sharing his love for music.

Join us in honouring Frank’s memory and supporting individuals affected by a brain injury.

The impact you have by taking part

Headway Jersey has been supporting brain injured islanders and their families for over 27 years, offering a diverse range of life enhancing services – physical and cognitive therapies, social activities and advocacy support designed to promote independence and enhance quality of life. This includes neuro-physiotherapy, craniosacral therapy, Saebo rehab sessions, swimming and exercise sessions, sewing, arts and crafts, communications group as well as monthly outings.

Most of our services are delivered at our day centre at Le Coie, which serves as a lifeline, providing a sanctuary where members can engage in meaningful activities, connect with others and combat feelings of isolation.

Our ability to support individuals who have suffered a brain injury and their families, has been significantly constrained over recent years due to the ongoing challenges posed to the charity by the cost of living increase and the scarcity of funding we receive.

Our running costs are in excess of £360,000 per annum and less than 10% of this is covered by government funding. Despite our association with Headway UK, we do not receive financial support from this network. Therefore, we rely heavily on the generosity and support from our community and local businesses to secure essential funds for our charity and enable us to sustain our vital services.

Your involvement will not only make a difference in the lives of those we support but also help us foster a stronger sense of community and awareness around brain injury, ensuring Headway Jersey can continue to bring individuals and families closer together so that no one feels alone during this challenging time.

You can stay updated with any changes or announcements on our Headway Jersey social media pages and event pages, as well as our website.

Race Terms and Conditions

Please carefully read the following race terms and conditions before entering the event.

Participant responsibilities

Taking part in the Running For Frubbs – Headway 10 Mile Race 2021 is a rewarding experience; however, it is not to be undertaken lightly. Participants need to be physically fit to complete the distance. If in doubt, please consult your doctor. Do not take part if you are feeling unwell.

Personal information regarding participants will only be used by us and any appointed third parties for purposes in connection with the event. By entering the event, you grant full and irrevocable permission for us to pass any medical details you have provided to the medical teams operating on the day of the event.

For safety reasons, participants are prohibited from wearing music devices, including earphones, during the race, as they may prevent you from hearing important safety instructions. Our marshals will ask you to remove any music devices. If you ignore this request, you do so at your own risk and the race organisers, sponsors and partners will not be held accountable.

Refund policy

Entry fees are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-DEFERRABLE, even in the case of event cancellation. This includes the minimum fundraising contribution which forms part of the entry fee. This policy applies to all tickets, including early bird tickets.

If a participant decides to cancel due to injury, illness, inadequate training or change of plans, no refunds or deferrals will be issued.

During the registration process, all runners are made aware of this refund policy and must agree to it to register. We aim for full transparency so that no participant feels cheated or let down if they need to cancel.

If you disagree with the refund policy, we kindly ask that you not enter the event.

We clearly outline our policy during registration and require agreement to ensure fairness and transparency. We cannot make individual judgments and strive to maintain a clear, universal policy for all situations.

In case of cancellation

Headway Jersey reserves the right to modify the race route at any time. If severe or extreme weather conditions such as flooding occur after the event has started, we may abandon the event at any moment. While we do not offer refunds in such situations, we will always strive to provide a suitable alternative.

If the race cannot take place due to factors outside of the race management’s control, such as flooding, severe weather or denied access to the original route (like a foot and mouth disease outbreak) we have the right to postpone the event. All entries will then be transferred to the new date. However, we will not offer refunds in these circumstances. If an event is cancelled due to uncontrollable reasons like a pandemic, public health concerns, travel or movement restrictions or any kind of bans, we will not be able to provide a refund. If the event gets indefinitely postponed due to certain issues, we reserve the right to retain all entry fees to cover the incurred costs.
